BBcode editor: PHP - The sensible approach
More with bbcode
By Jonathan Street

There was a time a while ago, around the time of these (BBcode editor & BBcode 'parser') two articles, when I thought processing BBcode submitted by a websites users was a complex matter. I thought it required complex regular expressions and even then my solution was far from complete. In truth, as complex as I thought the problem was, in reality it was probably more complex still.

On the other hand I could have handled the problem of dealing with BBcode far more simply by using one of the very good BBcode parser scripts which are already freely available. I became aware of this soon after finishing those articles when I spotted a BBcode parser on the PEAR website. Since then I’ve spotted a couple of other scripts, also available via PEAR.

The first point to note in this article is to check PEAR if you’re starting a new project as you are likely to find a package or two which can cut out at least a part of the project you were about to undertake.

The second point of this article is a brief introduction to using the first BBcode parser I discovered on PEAR.

What can I say richardj, I've learnt a lot since the first two articles.

I've just made a new post on my blog looking in detail at Text_Wiki_BBCode. It has some potential uses but HTML_BBCodeParser would still be my pick.
